History of St. Peter's Abbey and
the Parish Church

The former Chertsey Abbey and its Parish Church still survive as St. Peter's Shared Church. The Abbey, which was founded in AD 666 and dedicated to St. Peter, was destroyed almost entirely following its dissolution in July 1537.

The Parish Church was dedicated to All Saints, was then re-dedicated to St. Peter. A daughter church of the Parish Church at Eastworth in Chertsey was built in the 1890's and closed and demolished in the 1970's. During its short life, it was known as All Saints Church. From that time on, St. Peter's was officially known as "St. Peter's with All Saints".

You can read more about the history here. This is based on our old web site.

There was an Old Lady of Chertsey,
Who made a remarkable curtsey;
She twirled round and round
Till she sank underground,
Which distressed all the people of Chertsey.
